Located at the eastern end of Johnstone Strait and the northern end of Discovery Passage, it is accessible only by boat or seaplane, offering a secluded haven free from the bustle of ferry traffic for those seeking a true wilderness experience.

Nestled in a landscape where rugged coastlines meet tranquil bays and mist-covered forests stretch across untouched terrain, Sonora Island is surrounded by deep, nutrient-rich waters that sustain a diverse ecosystem. Sonora Through the Seasons

  • Winter
    (December – February)

The Breakwater Lodge is closed for the winter season. Winters on the Pacific Northwest’s "Wet Coast" are temperate. While snow may occasionally fall, it rarely stays for long. This time of year is marked by brisk winds and larger ocean swells, making storm-watching a popular activity along the coast, with frequent rain showers adding to the island's lush, green landscape.

  • 𖥧

    Spring
    (March – May)

As the weather warms, spring brings new life to Sonora Island. This is prime time for prawning and catching feeder spring salmon. This is also when the first signs of black bears emerge from their winter hibernation, beginning to explore the coastline in search of food. By May, bald eagles can be seen soaring overhead or perched in tall trees, adding to the island's vibrant wildlife activity.

  • 𖦹

    Summer
    (June – August)

Summer at the Breakwater is in full swing, with warm daytime temperatures and comfortably cool nights. This is when the waters teem with Chinook, Coho, and Pink salmon making it the best time for anglers to drop their lines and reel in the catch of a lifetime. The abundance of fish also draws whales closer to shore, providing opportunities to witness these creatures during their migration.

  • Fall
    (September – November)

As autumn arrives, temperatures on the island start to cool. Salmon begin their journey up the rivers to spawn, while grizzly bears eagerly await their arrival, foraging for their final feast before winter. The vibrant fall colors and active wildlife make this a memorable time to visit. By mid October, the Breakwater Lodge begins its seasonal closure as we prepare for winter.

The Breakwater Lodge provides guests a world-class salmon fishing experience that surpasses expectations at every stage. With a limited number of trips available each season, spots fill up fast.
